Sen. Webb’s GI Bill Becomes Law
Written by Phil McNeil
Webb On Monday, June 30, President Bush signed into law landmark legislation introduced by Senator Jim Webb (D-Va.) to provide post-9/11 veterans with comprehensive educational benefits. Last week, the legislation was overwhelmingly passed by both the House of Representatives and Senate.

Senator Jim Webb introduced this bill eighteen months ago on his first day in office. The bipartisan measure-- principally cosponsored by Sens. Chuck Hagel (R-NE), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), and John Warner (R-VA), has unprecedented support from all major veterans' organizations, in addition to strong bipartisan support in Congress, with a House vote of 416 to 12, and a Senate vote of 92 to 6.

$1.4 Millon raised for Moran campaign
Written by Washington Post

Brian MoranDel. Brian J. Moran (D-Alexandria) will announce today he's raised about $1.4 million so far this year for his campaign for governor, which his staff is touting as a record haul for a gubernatorial candidate making their first bid for statewide office.

Although the primary is almost a year away, Moran has been accelerating his campaign efforts in recent weeks, including building staff and traveling the state.

"He is getting help from people across the entire Commonwealth because Democrats realize he has a strong record and the best chance to win November of 2009," said Mame Reiley, director of Virginians for Brian Moran. "Brian's strong performance lays the groundwork for an impressive statewide finance effort and a successful campaign."

Herald Progress interviews HDC chairman
Written by BILL DORAN - Herald Progress
BarnetteRobert Barnette, HDC chairman, was interviewed by the Herald Progress to discuss the status of the Hanover Democratic Committee and its focus as the general election quickly approaches.  Read below:

"The Chairman of the HDC is Robert Barnette. Barnette has been chairman since December and believes the best hope for the Democrats in Hanover is to reach out to the independent voters.

"Hanover tends to vote strong Republican, but there are a lot of independents," said Barnette. "In the last primary alone we saw over 11,000 votes for Obama and 10,000 for McCain. If it was true that Hanover is heavily Republican, I don't think that would be the case.

"I think there are more independents in Hanover and our goal is to reach those independents by providing quality candidates who tend to have views that independents like. Whether you label yourself Republican or Democrat, in Hanover we have more in common than we have differences. That's where I see the Hanover Democratic Committee really making a difference.
