Concerns about noise at a gun club in western Hanover County have prompted officials to schedule a community meeting tomorrow evening. A consulting firm took sound tests during a rifle match Dec. 22 at Cavalier Rifle and Pistol Club and found that several shots slightly exceeded the 72-decibel threshold set by the county. The 436-acre club has proposed measures to ensure compliance with the county's noise regulations, including building a berm and adding sound-absorption material to an overhead cover on one of the ranges. In a letter to the county, the club's secretary, Sam Edwards, added that Cavalier will move several competitions to a new range away from the property's eastern boundary, where the highest noises were recorded. Hanover Supervisor John E. Gordon Jr. said he asked county staff to set up tomorrow's meeting because he has received at least 25 calls and e-mails from concerned residents since early December. Most of the complaints were about noise, he said, but at least one cited a fear of stray bullets. Tomorrow's community meeting will be at 7 p.m. at South Anna Elementary School. Gordon expects as many as 30 people to attend. EEE Consulting Inc. on Dec. 22 measured about 380 shots at the property's eastern boundary during a high-powered-rifle competition. It recorded five that were above 72 decibels. The loudest measurement was 72.9 decibels. READ MORE HERE |
