Senator DeedsThe International headquarters of I.U.P.A., which represents both the Fairfax Coalition of Police and Deputy Sheriffs Coalition, has seconded the endorsements made by its local divisions by throwing its support behind State Senator R. Creigh Deeds, candidate for Governor in 2009.

In a letter to Senator Deeds, I.U.P.A. International Executive Vice President Dennis J. Slocumb explains the International's endorsement is based on Senator Deeds' "...years of service to both the Commonwealth of Virginia and the men and women who provide for public safety."

Slocumb acknowledges that many politicians give lip service to public safety but often fail to prove their support by voting on tough issues. He compares their lack of courage to Deeds' exemplary service when he says, "You have always been beside us in actions that punctuate your rhetoric. You wrote Megan's Law that provided public access to the state's sexual offender registry and you also sponsored the Amber Alert program to protect our children."

Slocumb believes Senator Deeds' being a son of a police officer and past service as a state prosecutor has having given him, " ... rare and unique insight into the needs and challenges of the law enforcement community."

According to Slocumb, a 32 year veteran Deputy Sheriff, Deeds' experience, coupled with his unquestioned integrity and judgment, gives him empathy and perspective that has not only served him well in public office, but will prepare him to provide even greater service to the safety of Virginians as Governor.
